“Hugh’s current enquiry considers ideas of ritual, mortality and the duality of the human condition. The works offer a suggestion of how, despite our distance and differences, we each share common desires, questions and rituals which define our humanity. These rituals, incorporated into our daily lives, imbue small, quiet moments with weight and importance. The recurring gesture of smoking a cigarette acts as a symbol of the duality of life and death. In this act of pure pleasure, rebellion or escape, our mortality is welcomed with open arms into our day to day in an absurd play with death.”
